Turkey condemns Israeli occupation of Golan, Backs UN resolution

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s representative to the UN voiced strong support Tuesday for a General Assembly measure concerning the Syrian Golan, reiterating the long-standing international view that the region’s occupation is “null and void."

"Türkiye firmly supports the resolution on the Syrian Golan, which is scheduled for action today.
"For more than five decades, the international community has consistently affirmed through numerous resolutions of both the General Assembly and the Security Council that the occupation of the Syrian Golan is null and void, constitutes a clear violation of international law and must come to an end," Ahmet Yildiz told the UN General Assembly.

According to general summaries, the resolution asserts that Israel’s continued control and de facto annexation of the Syrian Golan violate international law and contradict Security Council resolution 497 (1981). It restates the applicability of humanitarian law, calls for a withdrawal to the June 4, 1967 line, and urges renewed negotiations and international engagement to revive the peace process.

"This resolution confirms that this principled and longstanding position remains unchanged," Yildiz said.

He told delegates that Syrians are beginning to move beyond what he described as an “exceptionally difficult period,” portraying the moment as part of a broader “historic process of political, social and economic recovery.” He also referred to the upcoming Dec. 8 anniversary, which Ankara views as marking the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in 2024 and signaling Syrians “regaining their freedom.” According to general accounts, he said the international community remains unified behind efforts to support Syria’s stability and reconstruction.

"At a time when Syrians are working to restore security, prosperity and social cohesion, Israeli military activities directly obstruct these efforts. Such attacks must cease immediately," Yildiz said.

He condemned what reports described as recent Israeli attacks near Damascus, including strikes in the Beit Jinn area that resulted in the deaths of 13 Syrians.

“These actions constitute a blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. “They endanger civilians and undermine regional stability as a result of a non-warranted and non-credible threat perception.”

Yildiz argued that genuine security cannot be achieved through the occupation of another state’s land. He restated Türkiye’s opposition to any unilateral efforts attempting to change the legal, demographic, or administrative character of the occupied Syrian Golan, calling such moves “illegitimate, unacceptable and without legal effect.”

He stressed that Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial wholeness — “core principles of the UN Charter” — must be upheld to safeguard regional stability.
