China opposes external interference as Iran protests continue
“China hopes the Iranian government and people can overcome current difficulties to maintain national stability,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing. He added that Beijing “stands firmly against external interference in the internal affairs of Iran” and called on all parties to contribute to “peace and stability in the Middle East.” Lin emphasized that China will continue to uphold the UN Charter and international fairness and justice.
Lin also noted that China follows a policy of partnership rather than alliance, referencing the 25-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement signed with Iran in 2021.
The protests, which have now entered their eighth day, have spread to at least 222 locations across 78 cities, fueled by worsening economic conditions, according to human rights monitors.
Demonstrations have included street protests, labor strikes, and university-led actions, with 17 universities reported as participating.
Despite heightened security and attempts to suppress gatherings, the unrest continues. At least 20 people have died, including a member of law enforcement, and around 51 others have been injured, primarily from pellets and plastic bullets fired by security forces. Those killed include students, workers, and civilians aged 16 to 45.
