Syrian government secures northeastern regions through Kurdish deal
The deal, accompanied by a ceasefire, comes after weeks of intense fighting. President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who assumed power following the overthrow of the previous administration in late 2024, aims to restore control over a nation fractured by years of civil war and foreign interventions, including by the United States.
As part of the agreement, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) will integrate into government institutions as requested by Damascus. The central authorities will also assert civilian oversight of northeastern governorates such as Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Al-Hasakah, which were previously under Kurdish administration and heavily contested during recent clashes.
In return, al-Sharaa pledges to uphold Kurdish cultural and linguistic rights and address outstanding legal matters related to property and status. SDF leader Mazloum Abdi is scheduled to meet the president on Monday, following a delay from his originally planned Sunday visit.
The settlement, announced after al-Sharaa met with a US special envoy in Damascus, is viewed as a strategic victory for the Syrian president and his Turkish allies. Ankara considers the SDF an extension of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a militant group that has waged a decades-long insurgency against Türkiye. The SDF has agreed to remove PKK elements from Syrian territory as part of the arrangement.
