Syrian-Kurdish negotiations break down as army reinforces north

(MENAFN) Negotiations between the Syrian government and Kurdish-led forces break down, a Kurdish official says, as the Syrian army sends reinforcements to tense areas in the north, according to reports.

President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi, head of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), had met to discuss a ceasefire agreement that would integrate the Kurds’ administration into the state. The proposed deal represents a setback for Kurdish ambitions to maintain the de facto autonomy they have exercised in parts of northern Syria for over a decade.

The talks follow rapid army advances into Kurdish-controlled territory, with Sharaa refusing to compromise on decentralization while pledging to protect minority rights.

"The negotiations held yesterday in Damascus between General Mazloum and Mr Al Sharaa have collapsed entirely," Kurdish official Abdel Karim Omar tells AFP, blaming the central government for the breakdown. He adds, "Their sole demand is unconditional surrender. A firm and decisive stance from the international community is urgently required."

Syria’s Kurds established a de facto autonomous region in the north during the height of the civil war. Sharaa, supported by both the United States and Turkey, rejects decentralization or federal governance, insisting that the army must be deployed across all of Syria.

On Monday, Sharaa discusses the Kurdish issue with US President Donald Trump, according to the Syrian presidency.
