Trump Says Iran Negotiations Underway
"We are negotiating with them right now," Trump confirmed to reporters at the White House, though he declined to elaborate on specifics.
The revelation follows a military confrontation hours earlier when American forces downed an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle that had closed in on the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group in Arabian waters.
Trump referenced prior military action when addressing the diplomatic outreach. "They had a chance to do something a while ago, and it didn't work out, and we did (Operation) Midnight Hammer. I don't think they want that happening again, but they would like to negotiate," he stated.
Tehran's Foreign Ministry independently confirmed the diplomatic efforts are progressing. Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei announced that "Planning has been made to hold the talks in the next few days, and consultations are underway to determine the location of the talks, which will be announced as soon as they are finalized."
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt revealed that US special envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to engage Iranian officials later this week.
Initial arrangements called for Witkoff to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Istanbul on Friday to address Iran's nuclear program, according to multiple reports.
However, media reported Tuesday that Iran demanded changes to the location and stipulated that Tehran wants to change the format. The news outlet indicated Iran is now insisting on bilateral discussions rather than the multilateral format that would have included representatives from Türkiye, Egypt, and Qatar. Media also reported Tehran is seeking to relocate the venue from Istanbul to Oman.
"They are negotiating," Trump told reporters at the White House, without providing further details.
