Starmer, Trump Hold Talks on Ukraine, Middle East, Iran Nuclear

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump held a phone call Tuesday to discuss the conflict in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran over its nuclear program.

According to a statement from the UK premier’s office, Starmer reiterated his condemnation of Russian attacks on civilians in Ukraine and emphasized the importance of advancing talks aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.

The conversation also touched on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Starmer highlighted the need for increased access to humanitarian aid amid the ongoing crisis. Reports note that a war in Gaza beginning on October 8, 2023, led to over 72,000 deaths, 171,000 injuries, and widespread destruction, with 90% of civilian infrastructure damaged and reconstruction costs estimated at roughly $70 billion by the United Nations.

The leaders affirmed their shared commitment to fostering stability and peace in the Middle East.

On the Iran nuclear issue, Starmer and Trump reviewed the negotiations underway in Geneva.

"Both agreed that Iran must never be able to develop a nuclear weapon, and they reiterated the need to work closely amongst allies and partners to improve regional security," the statement added.
